Internet and Gadget Society
Introduction
Formerly called the Internet and E-Commerce Society, our ever-growing circle has now expanded into the world of electronics and gadgets.
We now live in a world enriched with technology, and our society celebrates this on many levels. We aim to build a healthy community within the society, and we encourage social meetings, usually on Mondays. Games and chat are part of the fun! Discussions will allow students to preach about their technology experience, and others to be informed.
We discuss news on new technology and gadgets on the market. We will be holding gaming sessions and other, more fast-paced sports, such as RC car racing. We welcome students from all departments and all experience levels. Remember: imagination is more important than knowledge!
Projects and Learning
Our annual Web Design lecture series gives you a comprehensive guide the fundamentals. We teach a variety of web languages for all skill levels, including...
- HTML - the language that makes web pages (also XHTML and how it differs from its predecessor).
- CSS - make your pages look beautiful and consistent by writing your own style-sheets.
- JavaScript - make your pages more attractive and usable, in a friendly and forgiving programming language.
- PHP - output entire websites dynamically, and process requests from the user via web forms.
- MySQL - use the world's most popular database language to store lots of information easily.
Everything you need to get started is free, and if you have a computer or laptop, we can set it up as a pretend web server for you.
Other more hands-on projects are available to the engineering fans among you. Building small electronic gadgets from component parts in small groups will test your macro skills and teamworking skills, whilst being great fun too!
Business
The Society also organises events with industry, such as seminars from some of the biggest names in technology. This allows students to gain a better insight into current developments in the real world. If you are a business and interested in sponsoring such an event or providing support, then please get in contact with the president.
