The team consists of around 50 people this year, below are the project titles and briefs, along with the 4M student undertaking the project or the 3M student in charge of their DMT group
4M Projects 2009-2010
Chassis – Nicola Terdich
- Design and manufacture a steel chassis
Engine Optimisation – Chris Spencer
- Selecting an appropriate engine and conducting thermodynamic analysis of it and its subsystems
- Improving fuel efficiency and creating a new engine map with the use of appropriate software
Suspension Geometry and Steering – Karl Giles
- Design and manufacture steering mechanism
- Design lightweight high strength mounting bracket
- Determine suspension geometry
Uprights and Hubs – Henry Weaver
- Design and manufacture suspension uprights and hubs
Suspension Shocks and Vehicle Dynamics – Kristian Jenner
- Design and implement the shock absorber package, including springs, dampers, rockers and linkage for a double A-arm system
Wheels and Tyres – Peter Frampton
- Design a set of wheels and tyres, including central wheel components, rims and selecting suitable tyre compounds.
Electronic Differential – Leo Martins
- Design an electronic differential system that brakes the inside wheel on cornering in order to transfer torque appropriately
- Design and Manufacture of Fuel System
- Design and manufacture a fuel system comprising of fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel lines and all necessary safety devices
Drive Shafts and Brakes – Matt Taylor
- Design and manufacture the drive shafts and braking system with two independent brake circuits.
3M DMT Projects 2009-2010
Engine Forced Induction – Michael Ridge
- Design and manufacture a forced induction intake system using either a turbocharger or supercharger for increased efficiency.
- Deciding on the use of an intercooler
Suspension – Huang Ming Chong
- Design and manufacture suspension components, including wishbones, push rods and mounting brackets
- Work with Karl Giles to determine the overall suspension geometry
Transmission – Henri Sartorius
- Design and manufacture components for the transmission system, including linkages, mountings and the final drive mechanism
Engine Exhaust and Cooling – Manthan Pravin
- Design and manufacture the exhaust and cooling systems
- Investigate the use of an electric water pump and the radiator specifications required
Cockpit and Ergonomics – Richard Collins
- Design and manufacture the pedal box, steering wheel, quick release mechanism and seat
- Provide all necessary driver controls, including warning lights and emergency switching
Naturally Aspirated Air Intake – Simran Dhadda
- Design and manufacture a naturally aspirated intake system, including the air-filter, throttle, restrictor, plenum and runners
