Freshers' boiler suit rave

Posted Sunday, November 6th, 2011 at 17:49pm / No comments - by webmaster

Crazy freshers

On Wednesday, a group of freshers decided to put aside their fashion sense and wear their boiler suits to lectures. Whilst posing in the foyer, it seems like they happened across Professor Sherwin, and dragged him down to their level. Crazy freshers.

Hope you're all enjoying term so far. Just thought I'd share a few things with you - there are some programs we use in the department which are available commercially, but are free for students. You'll find it very useful to have these on your laptop as well as on the computers in the department so you're not stuck in ACEX a week before every deadline!

Matlab and CES https://www.imperial.ac.uk/ict/services/software/shop/index.asp (requires Imperial login)

Abaqus http://www.simulia.com/academics/learning-community.html (requires photo of Imperial ID)

Pro/ENGINEER (now Creo Elements) http://www.ptc.com/company/community/education/schools/ (just keep clicking the links to download free software, you'll need to register with PTC)

Welcome to the AeroSoc website!

Posted Wednesday, September 21st, 2011 at 10:31am / No comments - by webmaster

The website should be ready for use now. The "Aeronautics Tips" function doesn't work at the moment (and probably won't for the foreseeable future), but that's pretty much it. There's also no "Contact" page yet.

But forget all that for now... Allow me to introduce to you your committee for this academic year:

If you're a fresher just joining the department, feel free to join the…

WEBSITE UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Posted Monday, September 5th, 2011 at 11:10am / 4 comments - by webmaster

Hey all,

Sorry if you've visited this website in the last few years - it's been quite broken. I'm currently updating all the code behind it (if you're interested, mostly find/replace to change one word to another which seems to fix 80% of things so far :P), so bear with me... Feel free to have a look around, but no complaining if the website suddenly disappears for a bit!

AeroSoc Pro Evo Tournament

Posted Sunday, March 9th, 2008 at 22:32pm / No comments - by panserbjørn

PES6 LogoThe evening of Monday 25th February saw the advent of the first Pro Evolution Soccer tournament hosted by AeroSoc. A dozen-or-so wiley competitors made their way to the Roderick Hall lecture theatres for the opportunity to win just under £20 doing what they'd probably be doing anyway! Two PlayStation2s had been rigged to the rooms' audio/visual systems to provide students with a break from slides about compressibility and bypass cycles.

The tournament format consisted of a number of league groups; players in each group getting to play at least two games each. The top players from these groups would…

AeroSoc Poker Night

Posted Thursday, February 28th, 2008 at 13:04pm / No comments - by oc05

On Tuesday 19th Feb the Aero Common Room was once again taken over by the AeroSoc massive for the second hotly contested AeroSoc Poker Night of the year.

A good attendance was again dominated by 3rd year amateurs and people pondered about how rubbish the second years must be that they're just too scared to even turn up.

The evening began casually with a few drinks and some complimentary snacks laid on. The real action got started at about 6.30 with 3 tables of 8 players each. Re-buys were aplenty in the early minutes as alcohol-fuelled self-confidence boiled over. For…

AeroSoc trip to Airbus in Filton 6th Feb 2008.

Posted Thursday, February 7th, 2008 at 17:02pm / No comments - by oc05

The day started with another hot cup of coffee and some tired-looking baggy eyes. Devang was actually early for the first time and with no Materials slackers to dilute the gene pool everyone was on time and at 07:40 the race began: Paul and Owen, head to head on their way to Bristol. The journey was sunny, bright and southern - in stark contrast to the journey to Derby on the previous AeroSoc trip which was cold, dark and northern.

On arrival at Airbus in Filton, students were immediately impressed to find an ex-British Airways Concorde sitting aside the…

Aerosoc Pancakes

Posted Tuesday, February 5th, 2008 at 20:15pm / No comments - by oc05

Yet another huge success, the pancakes went down a storm with the Aero faithful and even managed to attract some outsiders, navigating the salubrious route to the common room. Special thanks go to Sam, for the organisation, Tom for the flipping skills and Chris and Paul for managing the money.

On another note, Food Fridays are set to make a comeback so get in touch with ideas about where to go and look out for news of forthcoming Poker night, Pro Evo night and much much more.

Aerosoc Trip to Rolls Royce

Posted Sunday, January 27th, 2008 at 11:53am / 1 comment - by oc05

A good mix of students from Materials and Aero enjoyed a highly interesting day touring the vast Rolls Royce civil aerospace site in Derby. There were presentations, tours and chances to chat with current graduates. Just another example of what Aerosoc can do for you.

"I'm-a-coming! Pizza Hut is going out of business!"

Posted Tuesday, October 30th, 2007 at 13:30pm / No comments - by panserbjørn

Ryan Williams and Edward Hughes prepare to face-off.Friday 26th November saw the commencement of the 2nd annual Pizza Hut Buffet Challenge in High St. Kensington. At 12pm around twenty-five plucky challengers met outside the Roderick Hill Building to take on the reigning champion, 3rd year Mustafa Abdel-Gadir, and his 32-slice record.

Having phoned ahead Pizza Hut were very accommodating, seating us all together in one section of the restaurant. Placing orders all round of a Pizza Hut Buffet, accompanied mainly by, "a glass of tap water, please", all that was left was to start feasting.

Several students signalled that they…
